"A Word" With Eyal Levi from Dååth !

Dååth is a Death Metal band from Atlanta, Georgia signed to RoadRunner Records.

It is hard to say they are a death metal band because their sound has a wide variety of black, industrial, progressive, and melodeath metal all used at the proper times.

When I first heard Ovum from the band's RoadRunner Debut "The Hinderers" I was really impressed with the opening riff along with Kevin Talley's trustworthy pulverized drums, but then the solo came in and that's when Dååth completely blew me away, and Its not just on Ovum, the whole album is a progressive, industrial, guttural attack with melodies that will spin you in the craziest rollercoaster !

The band is getting ready to release their latest work of Dååth "The Concealers" this February and recently they released a taste of whats to come from the band in a medley clip of the album and a new track called "Sharpen The Blades" which will surely get you the fuck up !

I got the chance to catch up with the band's founder and guitarist Eyal Levi and ask him about the new album, Mike's departure from the band, the band's new vocalist Sean Z, his other projects and more.
Heres how it went:

TMR: You guys are writing a new album "The Concealers" are you guys done with it or not yet ?

Eyal: Its done! It will be out February 2009.

TMR: Is it true that Mike left the band ?

Eyal: Correct. Mike is walking down his own path. He did contribute to the conceptual research on this record, but he is no longer in the band.

TMR: If Mike recorded Vocals for The Hinderers and Sean Farber left the band before recording any new material, that technically means he doesnt have any studio work with you guys officially released ?

Eyal: Correct again.

TMR: Hows Sean Z doing so far ?

Eyal: Amazing! He's the perfect fit for us on a musical and personal level. The man is a beast. He has the sound I've always wanted for the vocal end of DAATH. When he screams it doesn't matter if he has a microphone and effects or if its just him in the room. He sounds the way he sounds and it's POWERFUL. As if that isn't enough, he's a complete team player. What else can I say?

TMR: Who is producing "The Concealers"

Eyal: Jason Suecof with Mark Lewis Engineering and co - mixing

TMR: Whats bands are you into lately ?

Eyal: Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, and Portishead

TMR: What sound are you going for on the new album ?

Eyal: The main thing we were going for with the sound of the album was to capture an honest representation of who we are and where we were at during that point in time which is pissed off and out for blood. The sound ended up being very intricate, brutal, technical, catchy, and huge.

TMR: Why did Mike leave the band all of a sudden ?

Eyal: Mike didn't leave the band all of a sudden. It was a natural progression. He has his own path to pursue as do we.

TMR: Is someone else going to fill in for his duties ?

Eyal: No. We are going to focus on who we are now, not who we were then. The songs still have the same level of intricacy as before, however there's less synth. I've always been a big part of the synth end of DAATH and that will always be there, but Emil and I really wanted to take this in a more guitar oriented direction. The arrangements are still just as complex and layered but now instead of it being a synth symphony we're doing it with guitars.

TMR: Apart from DAATH you also produce, is there any other projects your involved with ?

Eyal: Yes. There's many projects I'm involved with. Some I can mention some I can't. There's a band out of Atlanta called From Exile who's four song masterpiece I'm producing. It should be done in a few months and I think it will blow some minds. Hopefully they will get signed from it. I also songwrite for various projects which I'll be talking about in the next few months. I'll sum it up. If I'm not constantly making music I go crazy.

TMR: What do you think of today's metal scene, do you you think its growing at a fast rate around the globe ?

Eyal: I think that metal is growing in the mainstream which is fantastic because it means that more bands can hope to make a living. I don't think metal ever disappeared or was ever small though. Metal has been around for close to forty years now and the fans stay loyal regardless of mainstream trends, and regardless of mainstream coverage. I'd say that metal fans are the most loyal fans in the world and if their mentality is spreading to the mainstream I can't complain about that. Let me add that I only believe that it's a good thing that metal is showing growth when bands don't change their sound in order to gain mainstream acceptance.

TMR: Would you like to add anything ?

Eyal: The new DAATH record, "The Concealers" comes out this February. We cannot wait to see you guys on the road. Now more than ever its vital that if you want to see a band live you show them your support by purchasing their records. That goes for any band out there. Remember, bands have mouths to feed, bills to pay, and gas tanks to fill. The economy is fucked for all of us.

I'd like to thank Eyal for taking the time to answer my questions !

I cant wait for "The Concealers" to come out ... It will kick all our asses left and right.

Until then. Fellas Sharpen Your Blades !
